Issues to consider before buying HIFI / High Fidelity headphones
There are no clear parameters that establish the boundary between what is and what is not a hi-fi device. Considering that the price of good HIFI headphones can be very high, what should we take into account before buying a specific model?
What type of headset should I choose? Earphones, in-ear, supra-aural or circum-aural
For us, the best headphones for listening to music are the circum aural or “over ear” headphones. They are larger in size, cover the entire pinna, insulate much more and allow a high frequency range to be reproduced without distorting the sound.
However, there are also high-end headphone options in the in-ear and on-ear segment, but you have to be more careful. In our case, we have prepared a short list of the best HIFI headsets in each segment.
Open or closed headphones?
Not all the best headphones for listening to music are the same. A first classification distinguishes between those with open and closed pavilions. What does this mean? The ear cushions that are in contact with our ears are usually covered by a casing, of which the design can be open, closed or even semi-open. Comfort, interior and exterior insulation and other important considerations to keep in mind will depend on this design.
- Open systems: The best headphones for listening to music at home and the most comfortable for very long sessions. The sound is quite natural, although perhaps the bass is not as powerful as in a closed system. They do not completely block ambient noise, so they are a good option for listening to music on the street, as they do not completely isolate us and we can hear some ambient sound (the horn of a car or someone calling us). They also let out some sound to the outside of the headphones, so they are not the most suitable if we have to talk in front of a microphone because the sound of what we are listening to will sneak in. Aesthetically they are easily distinguishable because the outside of the housing usually has some kind of grille or design that makes it clear that they are not completely closed. An example would be the Hifiman He1000V2.
- Closed systems: Normally, the best closed headphones on the market tend to weigh a little more because the housing is more solid to achieve greater isolation and over time they can become uncomfortable. The ear cushions themselves are wider to cover the entire ear, so the feeling of isolation is much greater, making it easier to concentrate. With them the sound experience is more intense and the bass is stronger. Their isolation works both inward (we do not hear external noises) and outward (so they are suitable if we are in front of a microphone). An example of this type of headphones would be the Meze 99 Classics
- Semi-open systems: These high-end headphones try to combine the best of each, such as having great comfort and remarkable isolation, which is not as intense as in a closed system. They are not advisable if we have to speak into a microphone because some sound comes out, especially the lower frequencies, as they have a longer wavelength.
What kind of drivers do I need in my headphones?
The drivers are what we popularly call “the helmets“, i.e., the parts that cover the ears and are usually connected by a headband. Inside are the transducers (the part that provides the sound itself) with the physical and electronic components that are the real engine of the headphones.
In HIFI headphones there are usually three main types, depending on the technology used to produce the sound:
- Dynamic headphones: Within the range of Hi Res headphones, they are the most used and the least expensive. This technology has been on the market for decades and is based on the transformation of the electrical signals they receive into acoustic signals. The electricity reaches a dynamic coil that surrounds a magnet, this causes a diaphragm (often conical or round in shape) to move, generating pressure waves in the air that are translated into sound. They have a very clear sound and extraordinary sensitivity, but at high volumes or at extreme frequencies they can generate distortions. They are the great classics, and if they have remained so for so long, it's for a good reason.
- Magnetic planar headphones: In magnetic planar headphones, the diaphragm is thinner, larger, not always round, stimulated by electrical signals and sensitive over its entire surface. It's located between two plates with polarized magnets through which electricity passes, which are able to make the diaphragm move with a greater force than in the dynamic ones. This gives the sound great definition and really low distortion. As an aspect to improve, we can comment that they have less sensitivity than traditional dynamics and often need the amplification of a good equipment to develop its full potential.
- Electrostatic headphones: They have an extremely thin diaphragm sandwiched between two thin, electrically conductive metal plates that create an electrostatic field. This causes the diaphragm to move and produces the acoustic signal we hear. The thinness of the diaphragm prevents any resonance or distortion problems. No electricity flows through the diaphragm, unlike in magnetic planars. It's a technology that makes the price of the headphones very expensive but that offers a very high resolution, a great natural quality to the vocals, speed in frequency changes and good response to mid and high frequencies mainly.
When do we need to use an amplifier for our headphones?
Sometimes we need an amplifier to make the hi-fi headphones we have bought reach their full potential. The fault for this is not the headphones themselves (that would be outrageous) but the low power of the electrical signal reaching them.
When this happens, the sound has no body and the response to the different frequencies is not satisfactory.
The path of the digital acoustic signal: digital file, DAC, amplifier and headphones: To understand this topic of amplification, we must take into account the path that the acoustic signal takes until it reaches our ears.
- It all starts when we listen to music that is in digital format (MP3, WAV, AAC and other files). These sound files (the songs) need to be transformed into an analog signal so that we can listen to them on the headphones (which do the final step, transforming that analog signal into the sound we hear). In other words, the signal goes from digital to analog and from there to acoustic signal.
- How is this digital signal converted into analog? This step takes place in the very reproductive apparatus we use, without us even being aware of it. This is where the DAC comes into play, an internal device found in players (be it an MP3 player, a computer or a cell phone) that transforms the digital signal into an analog signal so that it reaches the headphones.
- Sometimes this analog signal doesn't have the necessary power to make the headphones sound at the required level, so some models of music players (even computers or cell phones) have, in addition to the DAC, an internal amplifier so that the signal comes out with the necessary strength. This is usually sufficient when using mid-range headphones and we are not asking anything special from the sound we are listening to.
In the last step of this journey, the high-end headphones transform that analog signal into the acoustic signal that reaches our ears, i.e., ta-da! we get to hear that song we like so much.
So far so good… for those who have no major concerns. But, when one buys hifi headphones, it's because one wants to go a little further. It's not enough to distinguish one song from another; we want to enjoy every instrument, every melody, every detail.
What usually happens is that, with all our illusion, we connect our super headphones to the stereo and …. what happens?…the volume is not enough, the bass is poor, there are distortions and then you ask yourself: “what the heck is this?” Indeed, they sound just like the ones you get for free on the train and you wonder what you spent so much money for.
This is the fault of the weak signal to the headphones. They are good, they are excellent, but the signal is not up to par and ruins the experience for us. We have a sports car but the gasoline is of poor quality. How can we solve this? We need an amplifier that boosts the signal and allows us to get all the juice out of our beloved headphones.
Types of headphone amplifiers
This type of equipment not only increases the signal that reaches the headphones, but also prevents distortion, favoring a sound full of nuances that will make us enjoy the music even more. What types of amplifiers are there? They are available in portable and desktop versions:
- Portable amplifiers: They are about the size of a cell phone and have the necessary connections to connect your music player (even if it's an MP3 player, a laptop or a cell phone) on one side and your precious headphones on the other. They are used in recording studios, at live events (to equalize the input and output signal) and also to listen to music while walking or traveling. They incorporate batteries, usually lithium, which must be charged as if it were a phone.
- Desktop amplifiers: These are typically used at home or in the recording studio. They can be connected to a computer, a stereo audio system, a home theater or any audio source. They are larger than laptops, connect directly to the mains and often incorporate extra features such as digital sound processing (DSP) for surround sound, a large number of channels to better distribute the signal or a preamplifier to reduce interference.
Two concepts to take into account: impedance and sensitivity of the headphones
When talking about amplifying the signal of our headphones and improving the sound, there are two concepts that usually come to the fore and it's always good to clarify:
- What is impedance? It's the resistance offered by high quality headphones to the signal that reaches them(measured in Ohm). The higher the impedance, the weaker the signal and the more necessary the use of an amplifier. Often high quality headphones have a high impedance and need an amplifier capable of delivering adequate power to balance things out. If you see these specifications on an audio player, you can understand them if you read them from right to left: o 224 mW @ 16Ω (with 16Ω headphones the player gives us a power of 224mW) o 200 mW @ 32Ω (with 32Ω headphones the player gives us a power of 200mW) o 24 mW @ 300Ω (with 300Ω headphones the player gives us a power of 24mW).
- What is acoustic sensitivity? It's the ability of the headphones to transform the signal that reaches them in an acoustic signal, in sound (measured in dB/mW). The higher the sensitivity, the higher the volume at which the earphone will sound for a signal of similar power. Example: A 104 db/mW headphone extracts 104 decibels from each megawatt it receives, so it will be more efficient than a 90 db/mW headphone and will sound better.

- Sensitivity:99.8 db
The GRADO LABS SR325X is an open type “on ear” headphone that faithfully follows the aesthetics of this New York brand. For a very affordable price, it offers a clear and nuanced sound, with incredible details. The open design lets the sound escape a bit, but if you are looking for sound quality for a good price, it's the best model.
The design has a “retro” touch, with that slight “sixties” feel that makes Grado such a recognizable brand. The adjustment is comfortable and easy, thanks to the peculiar “antenna” shaped system. The capsules can rotate horizontally without limits. These HiFi headphones are handmade and this shows in the quality of the design. The new model comes with a better quality cable and new ear cushions.
These are supra-aural (on ear) headphones, i.e. they are worn directly over the ear. They weigh 340 grams and some users have complained about the fit. That said, they feel better after a few days, and they are worth it. They come with new ear pads that improve sound quality and bass levels.
First and foremost, these are quality headphones. The materials are of good quality (metal, synthetic leather, plastic) and give it a certain robustness, which is noticeable in the final weight of the product. The new cable seems almost unbreakable and is designed to transmit a purer sound than the previous model.
The 44mm transducers have also been upgraded to improve efficiency and reduce distortion. They are dynamic, with a great frequency response and a very low impedance (38 Ohmn), so we can use them without amplifiers (for example, connected to our smartphone).
The sound is brilliant. Balanced, with more detail than other headphones in the same price range. The transition between frequencies is smooth and the bass response is less intense than in other brands.
The new integrated drivers considerably improve sound quality. Compared to the previous model, the SR325Xs sound clearer and crisper in all tonalities. These headphones have always offered exquisite detail, but the new generation sounds more accurate.

Sundara means “beautiful” in Sanskrit, a name that fits these HiFi headphones perfectly. The Hifiman headphones have a clean, basic, minimalist design that looks very elegant. They integrate some elements with planar technology that are 80% thinner than in previous models.
This allows the billing process to be cheaper, which translates into quality comparable to much more expensive models. These headphones are open type and Over-Ear. They isolate sound poorly, but are perfect for use in quiet spaces.
The Hifiman Sundara high-definition headphones have a very solid build quality. They feature a robust, thick metal body that has a sleek matte black finish. They have an impedance of 37 ohms and a sensitivity of 94 dB.
You can use them with a smartphone and get decent volume, but not ideal. It's best to use an external DAC or headphone amplifier to obtain the best possible sound quality.
These high-definition headphones are very comfortable. The band integrates a strap that disperses the weight to lighten the pressure. In addition, the padding feels soft and doesn't retain heat. You can wear them for long sessions without any discomfort.
Due to their open design, they are not recommended for outdoors or very crowded rooms, as they do not isolate sound well, but they are ideal for use in the comfort of your home or in a studio.
The sound offered by the Sundara HiFi headphones is clear at all frequencies and presents itself with remarkable spatiality. The bass response is solid and has a good extension that doesn't drown out or dull the other tonalities.
These high-end headphones have a balanced profile in all tonalities and good dynamism ideal for playing any genre of music.
The medium-high tones stand out. We tested them by playing several pieces and were able to perceive excellent textures of the stringed instruments. The Hifiman Sundara HiFi headphones come with a new system for the detachable cable that represents an improvement over previous models. In the past, Hifiman headphone cables were fragile and difficult to remove. The Sundara's cable feels sturdy and connects to the headset with a standard 3.5mm plug. The cable terminates in a 3.5mm jack, measures 1.5 meters and is made of crystalline copper which ensures minimal resistance in the transmission of the audio signal.
The Hifiman Sundara are excellent HiFi headphones that are available for a very attractive price. We have not tested other headphones that sound as good as these in this price range. They offer sublime sonic detail and superb fidelity, allowing you to enjoy any genre of music with a quality that surpasses that of much more expensive models.

Somewhat uncomfortable for prolonged listening, low and high frequencies somewhat limited.
- Type: Over-Ear/Circumaural, closed type.
- Transducers: Dynamic
- Impedance: 32 Ω
- Sensitivity:103 db

They offer a more than acceptable sound quality, although for the most demanding users they lack some boost in the more extreme frequencies, both low and high.
The most striking features of these headphones are their wooden cups, the golden color of their metal parts and the leather of the headband. They convey a strong personality, a taste for noble materials and a search for sobriety.
These wired HIFI headphones stand out for their light weight (they only weigh 260 grams, well below average), and for not having very large drivers, and the headband is particularly comfortable (it's wide and padded). They are one of the best music headphones in their price range. Intrigued? Find the best prices on Amazon.

The Anonic 4 are the company's first dual-driver headphones. This series has been very popular since the launch of over-ear noise-cancelling headphones, but now Shure has focused on excellent in-ear models. They deliver a faithful, warm sound with excellent detail. In addition, they fit perfectly thanks to their design and numerous different cushions.
The Shure Aonic 4 is a unique in-ear HiFi headphone. They use dual dynamic and armature drivers in each cup. Its design offers improved signal acoustics. They offer dynamic bass with incredibly detailed treble, plus a natural and faithful separation between all tones. They integrate the best technology on the market in a very compact body.
The design is not the most attractive on the market. The Aonic 4 hi-fi music headphones are similar to other Shure In-Ear models. The cups are very small and the pads end up being larger than the shells. The highlight of the design is that they have a translucent body that allows you to see the internal components.
In terms of comfort, the Aonic 4 HD headphones stand out in the In-Ear market. This is because they come with a large selection of ear cushions for a perfect fit on any user. They come with three soft flexible pads (S,M,G), three foam pads, plus additional triple flange and yellow foam pads. Likewise, the nozzle-angled design of the cups ensures a snug and secure fit.
Dual armature and dynamic drivers give you great bass that stays controlled and doesn't overshadow other frequencies. The separation of the instruments is remarkable and the voices are perceived with a very clear articulation.
Another positive feature of this model is that they insulate you from external noise in a remarkable way. They do not have active noise cancellation, but block up to 37dB of noise to eliminate any distractions when enjoying your music.
The sound spatiality offered by the Aonic 4 HiFi headphones is also surprising. They rival the best models on the market in terms of expansive audio quality. They deliver deep stereo sound that maintains superb spatial fidelity and naturalness. Everything sounds as planned in the mix.
They come with a detachable cable that features a three-button control panel to control playback and volume. In addition, they have an integrated microphone for receiving calls. If you are looking for a wired In-Ear HiFi to answer calls, the Aonic is the best choice. You can also use them wirelessly, but you need an optional wireless adapter or another MMCX system.
This is a high-quality headset that will appeal to users thanks to its versatility. After testing them we were impressed with the sound quality and the perfect fit they achieve in our ears. The sound spatiality is surprising for an In-Ear hi-fi headset and is close to that of open-top models in this price range. Interested? Check out the best prices on Amazon.

The Audio-Technica ATH-MSR7BK are circumaural (over-ear) closed-back headphones, with dynamic technology and designed for portable use. It's the improved version of the ATH-M50X, resulting in a more rounded product, but also somewhat more expensive.
The finish of the ATH-MSR7BK is a bit better than the rest of the brand's “M” series. The good part is that they are more solid, and the bad part is that they are no longer foldable (although the earmuffs rotate 90º, which helps them store more conveniently). There are two designs: black with blue and brown with red.
The headband is very padded, more so than the average of other products in this range. The pads are made of very soft and breathable synthetic leather. They are large in size, thus favoring isolation. The weight is 290 grams, which is quite light compared to other similar headphones.
These HIFI headphones are made of magnesium and aluminum alloy. They are strong and simple. The ear pads are made of synthetic leather and the transducers are dynamic and measure 45mm. The whole assembly is well put together and conveys a feeling of solidity. Its low impedance (35 Ohm) gives a good sound quality even without an amplifier.
The quality of their sound positively differentiates them from their competition. Its response between the various frequencies is quite good, especially in the midrange, where it achieves a great amount of detail. Bass is smooth and treble is perhaps a bit accentuated, but overall improvements have been achieved in all ranges.
These headphones come with three cables: two 3.5 mm connection cables (1.2 and 3 meters) and a smartphone cable with microphone and volume control.
This is a highly recommended and good sounding product. They can be used in many different environments and their low impedance makes them ideal for use with smartphones. A good choice in this range of HIFI headphones in the mid-low price range. Check out the best prices on Amazon.
Lightweight and comfortable, sound quality.
The open design lets sound escape.

The Grado SR80x are very inexpensive headphones for the quality they offer. They are the latest update of the first Hifi helmets produced by the company in 1991. The Prestige X line offers the brand's new affordable HiFI headphones and the SR80X is the best value for money.
The Grado SR80x is an attractive open-type on-ear headphone. They feature Grado's characteristic industrial-looking circular cups. They look almost identical to the previous generation, but integrate a more generous padding under the headband and a more resistant jack.
They have an open design that produces excellent sound spatiality for this price range, although they do not isolate external noise or block sound decently. They are not ideal for noisy environments such as offices, but are ideal for critical music listening in the home.
The Grado SR80x are more comfortable than the previous model. They are lightweight and have a very comfortable headband that doesn't cause pressure or discomfort during prolonged sessions. The cups are quite large for On-Ear and fit any user well. The padding of the cups, as well as the headband, is excellent for this price range.
The new generation of HiFi Grado SR80 headphones integrates drivers specially designed for HiFi headphones. New 44mm drivers improve efficiency and reduce distortion. They feature a new magnetic circuit along with a reconfigured diaphragm that preserves the harmonic integrity of your music.
These new HiFi headphones, like the brand's other models, are handmade in Brooklyn. The build quality is really excellent and remarkable in this price range.
These open hulls produce an impeccable bass, excellent mid tones and very clear treble. Sound spatiality is unique for this price range. These high-end headphones reveal exquisite sonic details.
Bass response is excellent. The mid-tones are presented very faithfully and have a good presence. Overall, the sound quality is incredible for a cheap HiFI headset. The harmonic distortion is minimal, the vocals sound rich and the dynamism is incredible.
We tested the SR80Xs by playing several songs from our phone and were amazed at the transparency and sophistication of the sound. The new drivers work perfectly. Audio is perceived to be more faithful, cleaner and more detailed than in previous models. The rhythms have more presence and the spatiality also improves.
These HiFi headphones come with a new 1.8 meter durable cable with 3.5mm termination, plus a 6.3mm adapter, so you can use them with any device that has headphone connections.
The SR80X are very affordable and excellent high-definition headphones. Their price is actually surprisingly low for the sound quality they offer. They are comfortable and lightweight. They do not isolate external noise very well due to their open design, but if you are looking for cheap HiFi headphones these are the best. Find the best price on Amazon.
Excellent value for money, comfortable.
Made of plastic, except for the bands covering the headband.

The AKG K72 is a HiFi headset perfect for critical music listening. They offer excellent audio and are also very affordable. If you don't need wireless connectivity and are looking for quality for a very cheap price, the AKGs are the perfect model.
The AKG K72 has a large circular over-ear design. The long ear cups can cover any ear and offer the best comfort in this price range. Two metal bands on the padded headband improve fit and relieve pressure.
They have a classic design and look attractive. That said, they are too large for outdoor use. Sound isolation is also somewhat limited, although these are closed type HiFi headphones.
Our only complaint is that the audio cable is not removable. The headphones are made of plastic, except for the metal bands. They don't feel as robust as the more expensive models, but the build quality is good.
The AKG K72 are quite comfortable. They have soft padding and the cups are large. The synthetic leather pads are great, better than any others in this price range.
These HiFi headphones shine in the sound department. We were impressed with their performance, especially considering the price. The balance is very well achieved. The bass is not overly loud, but it remains controlled and gives you the depth you need to enjoy any song.
The mid-tones have a great presence, while the vocals and instruments stand out regardless of the musical genre. The treble also sounds very good, is crisp and has no noticeable distortion at high volumes.
Overall, the AKG K72 headphones offer great sound quality for their price. Bass response is extended and remains controlled, while mid and treble tones are very well balanced. The audio is perceived as expansive and neutral. They reproduce complete pieces and rhythms in a remarkable way.
That said, the mid-tones are perceived with extra coloration that we don't love. The vocals and middle instruments sound less coherent than the rest of the keys, although this is not very noticeable.
The AKG K72 comes with a non-removable 3 meter cable. The cable is sturdy and thicker than those found in most cheap headphones. They are perfect for home use with your computer, DAC, digital player or amplifier, although they are not the best for outdoors.
The AKG K72 is a very inexpensive HiFi headphone that offers great sound quality. They are very comfortable and the build quality is decent. If you're looking for cheap HD headphones for listening to music at home, these are great. Intrigued? Find the best prices on Amazon.
